Getting Started

Starting anything new can be a bit daunting. A lot of people find pole work quite physically demanding at first, but after a little practice and mastering a few exercises, you’ll probably surprise yourself with just how much you can achieve.

1. Go for a spin

If you’ve never been on a pole before, I’d recommend starting with the Fireman – most people get the hang of it quickly and it’s a lot of fun too! Practise getting your body shape and the motion just right – watch yourself perform the spin in a mirror. Doing this will increase your body awareness and help you progress more quickly with other exercises.

2. Hang in there

Next, try the Hang Tough exercise. This will give you an idea of how much strength you already have. See how long you can hold it – time yourself by counting out loud. Start with this exercise each time you begin your pole practice. You should notice your strength increasing as your time hanging extends.

3. Building skills

Building skills imageStart working through the Spins and Skills chapter on the DVD. Try to avoid missing exercises – it’s important to master the basic moves first as your body will be much stronger and better able to cope with the more demanding advanced moves. If you find an exercise particularly difficult and you’re just not making progress then do skip it and move on, but please try to go back to it later.

4. Taking it further

Now you’ve built up a good range of moves and are progressing well, move onto the more advanced exercises in the Muscle Tone and Inverts chapter. You’re well on the way to becoming super proficient at Pole Exercise!
