In yet another sign the rapidly maturing pole scene, a pole dancing magazine is due to be launched soon.
The Art of Pole Dance sets out to cater for pole dancers at all levels, with content aimed at schools, professionals and beginners. Top billing in each issue will be given to feature interviews with stars from the world of pole dancing. The publishers are also planning articles on pole competitions and events, alongside items on choreography and fashion.
The magazine will be published biannually and distributed worldwide. We’ll bring you more details when we have them.

Struggling with your pole dancing moves and want a bit more grip? Need some extra leg protection for those extended pole sessions? Want to look fabulous at the same time? Then you need a pair of boots in your life!
Not all boots are good (check the tips below for some pointers), but choose the right ones and you’ll benefit from significantly more grip while pole dancing.

So pole dancing is meant to make you look and feel great. But when you get home after class you find you’re covered in bruises. Surely that’s not how it’s supposed to be?
Bruising is a common problem, particularly for people you who have just started pole dancing. Unfortunately it’s almost inevitable too – unlike most sports, pole dancing relies substantially on soft parts of the body that aren’t designed for heavy use, and that don’t have a nice layer of toughened skin and tissue to shield them. You can’t wear much protective clothing either, as it’s your skin that keeps you stuck to the pole.
Luckily bruising does decrease as you get better at pole dancing, and the tips here should reduce the problem for you even more.

What could be better than a smooth and skilful pole dancing performance? How about a smooth and skilful pole performance with some amazing gymnastics moves thrown in too?
Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the most popular video I’ve put on YouTube, a pole routine starring Sarah, a former student of mine. Sarah had been doing (and teaching!) gymnastics for several years before she started pole dancing with me, and she puts a lot the skills and techniques she learned there into her pole work to create striking – and amazingly bendy – performances.

Difficulty: Intermediate
The gemini is a dramatic pose and stretch that’s relatively easy to perform as you keep your body against the pole throughout the move. If you’ve mastered the basic invert, there are just a couple of extra steps to get into the gemini.

Much more than just a fashion statement, what you wear on your feet can really boost your pole dancing prowess.
Think for a moment about the contact area between your feet and the pole. Tiny, isn’t it? Yet that small area is vital for getting you up the pole, keeping you on the pole and sometimes even suspending your entire body weight from it.
The right footwear will also make your pole work much more comfortable, protecting your skin from bruising, scrapes and carpet burns.

Here’s a commercial for Nando’s Fix Gum, a (fictional) product to help you get through the day while craving the (real) Nando’s Peri-Peri sauce. I love the way the whole ad is incredibly traditional – the assured voice over, the elevator music, the happy family – but with a little extra thrown in…

Learning new pole moves is always very satisfying, but the real fun starts when you put them all together into a smooth and sexy routine!
Here’s the breakdown of a pole dance performance I put on YouTube a few months ago, together with tips for each move that I’ve found useful myself or when teaching. I’ve often been inspired watching other people’s pole work, sometimes even taking my own performances in completely new directions. So I hope it inspires some of you too!

Glamourpuss has posted an excellent guide to finding good pole dancing lessons – and a few other things you should look out for as well.
Things to Check out Before You Sign up and Part With Your Cash
Pole dancing classes tend to be taught either by ex-club dancers or fitness instructors, and to be honest, I’ve seen some pretty shocking practice from both. Fitness qualifications do not necessarily denote a good teacher, but do check the format of the class – there should be a warm-up, lots of structured pole activity and a cool-down or stretches to end. […]What to expect
We all feel a bit silly and embarrassed when we start, and we all wonder how the instructor can make it all look so effortless. In the course of your pole lessons, you will experience pain, laughter, the kind of bonding that only happens between women who stare at each other’s crotches week after week, and an exhilarating sense of achievement when you nail a new move.

Almost everyone suffers from sweaty hands at some point. Luckily there are a number of liquids and powders you can use on your hands and legs to get you through those difficult pole moves.
I’m not aware of any products specifically for pole dancers (do let me know if there are!), but there’s a wide range of aids for other sports – anything from rock climbing to golf – that work just as well on a pole.
